Paying Board Members?

Can we pay our Board members?

Sure, if they work in the organization in some capacity! For example, if the Vice President is also the Executive Director, it’s probably appropriate to pay the VP for working as the ED.

If they’re just Board members attending monthly meetings, probably not (although you can reimburse them for travel expenses, etc.)

As a general rule of thumb, the organization should have two unpaid Board members for every one Board member getting paid to work in the organization. That keeps the IRS happy, and that’s always a good thing!
